Roller Skating is Great Exercise!

Everyone knows a key component to being healthy is to be active and get plenty of exercise. But, usually we equate exercise to being dull, repetitious drudgery. Why not exercise the fun way by going roller skating?

1.      Roller Skating causes less impact to joints than running according to a UMASS study.
2.      According to a CPSC study, skating is almost 2 times as safe as playgrounds, more than 3 times safer than football and baseball, almost 4 times safer than basketball, and almost 5 times safer than bicycling.

1.      Roller Skating burns 390 cal/hr when skating at 6 mph and 600 cal/hr at 10 mph.
2.      Roller Skating provides the same health benefits of jogging, including calorie burn and reduction of body fat.
3.      Roller Skating is an aerobic workout that uses all the body's muscles.

1.      Many people continue to skate long into their adulthoods. As mentioned in the history of Great View Roller Skating on our History page, Bettina Corliss who learned to skate at the age of 61 and continued teaching skating into her late 80's.

1.      Roller Skating is for everyone, even those with limited athletic ability. Because it is an individual sport, roller skating allows everyone to set their own goals and only compete against themselves. Of course, there is plenty of opportunity for socializing and meeting people, and a spirit of competition during our speed skating races!
